In short
Commercial heat pump services cover the installation, servicing and repair of air-to-water and air-to-air heat pumps that heat, and often cool, commercial buildings. Engineers check refrigerant circuits, coils, defrost operation, flow temperatures and controls, so systems run efficiently. Installation starts with assessing heat loads, emitters and electrical capacity to confirm a heat pump suits the building.
What heat pump services involve
- feasibility surveys and heat load assessment for new installations
- installation, commissioning and handover
- coil cleaning, fan checks and defrost checks
- flow and return temperature and water flow checks
- refrigerant checks and F-gas leak checks where required
- controls, weather compensation and scheduling checks
When heat pump work is needed
- boilers are reaching end of life and you are considering alternatives
- energy or carbon targets require lower-carbon heating
- existing heat pumps are not reaching temperature or are icing
- annual servicing is due
Equipment covered
| Type | Typical application |
|---|---|
| Air-to-water heat pumps | Heating (and sometimes chilled water) via radiators, fan coils or AHUs |
| Air-to-air / VRF heat pumps | Zoned heating and cooling in offices, retail and hotels |
| Hybrid systems | Heat pumps working alongside existing boilers |
Our process
- Survey. Building, existing heating, electrical supply, plant space.
- Proposal. Options and quotation, with assumptions stated.
- Installation and commissioning. To the agreed programme.
- Servicing. Ongoing maintenance to keep efficiency up.
Typical applications
Office refurbishments, retail units, schools and colleges, hotels and mixed-use buildings replacing or supplementing gas boilers.
Maintenance considerations
Heat pump efficiency depends heavily on flow temperatures and controls. Keep flow temperatures as low as comfort allows, keep coils clean and check that defrost cycles are working.
Compliance and safety
New installations must meet Approved Document L. Refrigerant work must be done by F-gas certified engineers. Electrical supply upgrades may be needed and must be designed and installed by competent electricians.

Commercial Heat Pumps: frequently asked questions
Will a heat pump work in our existing commercial building?
Often, but it depends on heat loss, the emitters (radiators, fan coils or underfloor heating), the flow temperatures they need, plant space and electrical capacity. A survey and heat load assessment confirm feasibility.
Can heat pumps provide cooling as well as heating?
Air-to-air systems such as VRF heat pumps can heat and cool. Some air-to-water systems can produce chilled water. The right arrangement depends on the building's needs.
How often should commercial heat pumps be serviced?
Most commercial heat pumps should be serviced at least annually, with F-gas leak checks at the frequency the regulations require for the system's refrigerant charge.
Why is our heat pump icing up?
Frost on outdoor coils is normal in cold, damp weather and is cleared by defrost cycles. Persistent heavy icing points to a defrost, airflow, sensor or refrigerant fault that should be checked.
Are there grants for commercial heat pumps?
Funding schemes change regularly and many apply only to certain sectors. Check current GOV.UK schemes before planning a project.
